Many people aspire to be writers, telling stories to their readers that will ultimately touch their lives in some way. Although writing a book may be the goal, there are just as many people who never reach that dream, unfortunately. It can be overwhelming to even start writing and making sure your writing is good and will reach readers on an emotional or intellectual level.
“You rely on a sentence to say more than the denotation and the connotation; you revel in the smoke that the words send up.”
“Protect the time and space in which you write. Keep everybody away from it, even the people who are most important to you.”
“The main rule of writing is that if you do it with enough assurance and confidence, you’re allowed to do whatever you like. So write your story as it needs to be written. Write it honestly, and tell it as best you can. I’m not sure that there are any other rules. Not ones that matter.
“I would advise anyone who aspires to a writing career that before developing his talent he would be wise to develop a thick hide.”
These great authors of history tried to give their best advice on the weighty task of writing. Some advice may contradict others and some even go against what you may have been taught in school. The truth is, writing is an extremely personal act, one that varies greatly from person to person. The best advice I can offer is to get started. Many people dream of completing a book but never see it to fruition. If writing is your passion, write as much as you can and strive to get better.
